Who Is Shawty Dred? From Shawty Lo’s Circle to Instagram Fame to a Federal Indictment

Who is Shawty Dred? He is Mercedes Reshard New, 39, an Atlanta comedian, rapper and Instagram personality who was indicted on October 7 on 63 federal counts accusing him of stealing roughly $4 million in food stamp benefits.

Long before the charges, New was building a name in Atlanta. He was born September 26, 1987, and raised in the city. His own YouTube bio says his first taste of fame came from being close to the late Shawty Lo, the Bankhead rapper behind D4L and “Dey Know,” who died in 2016. A 2021 profile described his path as running from the trap to Shawty Lo’s side. Outside of New’s own account, there is little public record of how close that relationship was. The association still gave him an early foothold in Atlanta hip hop.

The skits took him further. New branded himself #TheSkitGod and built his content around a loud, exaggerated personality and a catchphrase he says he created: “HEYYY PARTNAAA.” The phrase became a running bit and eventually a brand. His Instagram account, @richlifeshawtydred, grew past 2 million followers on the strength of those videos and a steady stream of flex content.

Music was part of the plan too. He released singles under the Shawty Dred name, including a 2021 track called “Skit God.” In interviews, he said acting was the real goal and that he wanted to command the kind of multimillion dollar movie checks Hollywood stars get.

He also pitched himself as a businessman. In 2021, New said he had taken the money he made from Instagram and was putting it into restaurants across Atlanta. He talked about growing his brands, Shawty Dred LLC and HEYYY PARTNAAA, and said he planned to open three restaurants and a strip club under those names.

That company, Shawty Dred LLC, now sits at the center of the federal case. For anyone asking who is Shawty Dred today, the answer runs straight through the indictment.

SNAP is the federal food assistance program most people still call food stamps. Families who qualify get a monthly balance on an EBT card, which works like a debit card at approved stores. In Georgia, the Division of Family and Children Services runs the program. Recipients are not allowed to sell or trade their benefits.

Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia allege that from January 2020 through July 2026, New controlled more than 350 fake SNAP accounts set up with stolen identities. He allegedly had the EBT cards for those accounts mailed to different addresses around metro Atlanta. He then applied to make Shawty Dred LLC an authorized SNAP retailer, meaning the business could legally run EBT cards through its own card reader.

According to the indictment, that is exactly what he did. Between April 2024 and November 2025, prosecutors say New swiped fraudulently obtained EBT cards through the point of sale device tied to his company and took more than $660,000 in benefits. Over the full stretch of the alleged scheme, the state deposited about $4.6 million into the fake accounts, and roughly $4 million was drained from the program. A separate Justice Department summary puts the loss at $4.4 million.

The trail started with phone calls. In 2025, the Georgia Department of Human Services Office of Inspector General noticed strange activity on the automated phone line SNAP recipients use to check balances and manage cards. Investigators found that numbers linked to New had called the system more than 9,000 times and accessed over 350 different accounts. The Justice Department says the case eventually connected more than 500 Georgia EBT cards to him.

The government moved before the indictment came down. In November 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture pulled Shawty Dred LLC’s authorization to accept SNAP. About two weeks later, East Point police arrested New at a Walmart after he allegedly tried to sell EBT cards to shoppers. Officers took 14 cards issued in other people’s names. Prosecutors say he kept going anyway, allegedly having replacement cards mailed to his business and other Atlanta addresses.

All the while, the Instagram feed kept rolling. Prosecutors pointed to posts showing New on private jets, posing with Rolls Royce and Maybach vehicles, flashing stacks of cash and calling other people broke. The FBI’s Atlanta office says the stolen benefits paid for that lifestyle, though prosecutors have not tied specific purchases to the fraud.

The case has also become a political talking point. JD Vance brought up Shawty Dred by name at a press conference with the White House fraud task force, saying SNAP “does not exist to provide private jets to a guy like Shawty Dred.” Vance also claimed the influencer’s own Instagram helped investigators build the case. The indictment was announced as part of a national USDA enforcement push that the Justice Department says charged more than 40 people in about $42 million in alleged SNAP fraud.

New faces 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of SNAP fraud and one count of illegal transactions with access devices. Aggravated identity theft carries a mandatory two year federal prison sentence on top of any other time. These are allegations, and New has not been convicted of anything. Prosecutors have not said how the identities used to open the accounts were obtained, and they have not announced whether any of the cars or other assets from his social media have been seized.
