Kim Kardashian came face to face with a hater on CW’s H8R who says Kim copies Black women and doesn’t do nearly enough for the Black community.
H8R, hosted by Mario Lopez, sits celebrities down with their biggest critics to see if they can win them over. Kim’s episode airs Wednesday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET, and her hater is a Black woman named Deena.
Deena doesn’t hold back. She takes issue with the lip injections, the tan and the whole curvy figure Kim has built her fame around, when Black women were walking around with all of that long before Kim showed up. “I thought we had the corner on that,” Deena says. Her bigger point is that Kim borrows so much from Black women and gives so little back.
Kim says hearing it hurt. “It hurts me to hear some of the things that you say,” she tells Deena. Then she runs down her résumé. “You didn’t hear about me [going to] New Orleans, or building the homes or meeting this family,” Kim says. “Or going to Africa. We’re filming in Africa. This season I’ve been to Africa three times.”
So does Kim Kardashian owe Black people anything?
Let’s be honest about how we got here. If it weren’t for her tape with Ray J and her years with Reggie Bush, most Black folks would not know or care who she is. Kim isn’t Black, and a lot of us are tired of seeing her everywhere.
Deena may have just been looking for a PG way to say she isn’t a fan. “You don’t do enough for Black people” sounds a lot nicer on network TV than what a lot of people really think of Kim.
And of course Kim loves Black people. Look at her dating history. Did she go to New Orleans? Absolutely. She was dating Reggie Bush when he played for the Saints. Somebody had to help him pack up and get out of there. Is she really spending all that time in Africa? No doubt in my mind. She’s probably out there looking for her own Djimon Hounsou.
Here’s the twist. By the end of the episode, Deena walks away with a new respect for Kim. Kim Kardashian won over her hater.
She still isn’t winning over everybody. Kim holds no real weight in the Black community, and she is nobody’s philanthropist. The fact that Deena cared enough to go on TV about it means one more person is paying attention to Kim Kardashian than needs to be.
