A sixth grade student reportedly shot two students and a custodian at an Idaho middle school on Thursday morning before a teacher disarmed her, according to authorities.
Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said the shooting happened around 9:15 a.m. at Rigby Middle School in the city of Rigby. He said the girl pulled a handgun from her backpack and fired it multiple times inside and outside the school. Students and staff heard gunfire and were evacuated to a nearby high school.
Authorities said the three victims were shot in their limbs and are expected to survive. The two injured students remained in the hospital in fair condition. A trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Dr. Michael Lemon, called it a blessing that they were not hurt worse.
A female teacher disarmed the girl and held her until police arrived. She was taken into custody. Her identity was not released, and authorities said they were working to learn where the gun came from. Anderson said investigators did not yet know why it happened. “We’re following all leads,” he said.
Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin said schools across the district would close so students could be with their families, with counselors available on Friday.
