A seven month old baby boy from Kershaw County, South Carolina has tested positive for coronavirus, according to reports from ABC News and The State.
The baby, Emmett, was confirmed positive at an urgent care in Elgin on Tuesday night. Reports say he likely caught the virus from his grandmother, who tested positive for COVID 19 on Saturday.
ABC News reported that the whole family is required to stay in quarantine until April 1, 2020, under an agreement with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Two other young children in the home have not been tested and are not showing symptoms at this time.
Emmett’s mother, Courtney, shared his story publicly to spread awareness, and it has since gone viral. She told The State that she had heard COVID 19 mostly spared children, and she was surprised when her son began showing symptoms after being around his grandmother. Courtney said she had been told by many people not to worry because kids cannot get it, and she believes that mindset leads some people to take the virus less seriously.
She also said that getting a diagnosis was not simple. Even healthcare workers were unsure whether the adult test would work on such a young child, and it took nearly three hours to figure out where to go.
Emmett’s fever has since gone away, and the family was reported to be glad to have him home. According to The State, he is one of 125 confirmed cases in South Carolina and is very likely the youngest. His grandmother was one of the first confirmed cases in Kershaw County.
