Lady Gaga Quietly Had A Baby After Years Of Trying: The Struggle She Kept Off The Timeline

Lady Gaga’s long-awaited move into motherhood reportedly came after a deeply personal journey that tested her physically and emotionally before ending with the family she had hoped to build.

Gaga, 40, had been trying to have a baby with fiancé Michael Polansky as far back as 2024. Friends described the Lady Gaga baby journey as one filled with “ups and downs,” saying the singer had wanted motherhood for years even as health concerns complicated the process.

“Stefani’s had a hard road to travel physically,” one source told Page Six, referring to Gaga by her birth name, Stefani Germanotta. The source continued, “There have been moments of giddiness,” followed by “and moments of despair. It has been so sad.”

The source added, “It’s a real tale of hard times, both physical and emotional, en route to this happy ending.”

Gaga’s medical history has been part of her public story for more than a decade. According to the outlet, she underwent hip surgery in 2013 after an injury became serious enough to force her away from performing. Speaking to Andy Cohen about the damage, Gaga said, “I had a tear on the inside of my joint and a huge breakage.”

“The surgeon told me that if I had done another show I might have needed a full hip replacement. I would have been out at least a year, maybe longer,” she said.

A source told the outlet that those earlier problems remained relevant while Gaga pursued motherhood. “She’s had severe hip issues and a heap of other physical ailments, alongside everything she puts her body through when performing,” the source said.

Gaga later revealed that she lives with fibromyalgia, a condition associated with widespread pain and fatigue. Her struggle with chronic pain was documented in the 2017 Netflix documentary “Gaga: Five Foot Two.” Discussing how performing could temporarily push her through difficult moments, she said, “When I feel the adrenaline of my music and my fans, I can [expletive] go. But it doesn’t mean I’m not in pain.”

Her physical struggles have also intersected with serious emotional trauma. During the Apple TV Plus series “The Me You Can’t See,” Gaga discussed the lasting effects of being sexually assaulted by a music producer when she was 19. She has also described experiencing a “total psychotic break” around 2019.

“For a couple years, I was not the same girl,” Gaga said. “The way that I feel when I feel pain was how I felt after I was raped. I’ve had so many MRIs and scans where they don’t find nothing. But your body remembers.” According to Vogue, Gaga has previously connected trauma, PTSD, chronic pain, and her experience with fibromyalgia while advocating for greater compassion toward people living with conditions others cannot see.

Through those difficult chapters, Gaga’s relationship with Polansky eventually became a source of stability. In a 2024 interview with Vogue, she discussed how their relationship deepened after they spent extended time together during the pandemic. Polansky later proposed in April 2024 following a day of rock climbing, according to Vogue. The couple publicly confirmed their engagement that year.

By 2025, Gaga was openly talking about the future she wanted beyond the stage. During an October appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” she said, “What I really want is to be a mom. That’s my next starring role, I hope.”

She became even more direct while speaking with Rolling Stone later that year, telling the publication that motherhood was the thing she wanted most and expressing confidence that Polansky would be a loving father. Polansky also discussed their plans for parenthood, making clear that starting a family had become part of the couple’s shared vision.

The Lady Gaga baby news finally emerged in September 2026. Page Six published photographs of the couple with a baby in Northern California. Neither outlet reported the child’s name, sex, or exact birth date, and Gaga has kept those details private.

For Gaga, the arrival represents the realization of a goal she had been discussing long before the public knew how complicated the road had become. After years of balancing extraordinary career demands with physical pain, mental health struggles, and private hopes for a family, motherhood has now become the starring role she repeatedly said she wanted most.
