A quiet Sunday morning in Shreveport, Louisiana, turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy as eight children and teenagers were killed in a spree of domestic violence.
Authorities confirmed that ten people in total were struck by gunfire during the incident, which spanned multiple residences across the city. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was later killed by police following a carjacking and a high speed chase.
Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon explained during a news conference that the situation was domestic in nature. He noted that investigators believe the victims were the descendants of the shooter. The ages of those who lost their lives are particularly staggering, ranging from a 1 year old baby to a 14 year old.
The violence broke out just after 6 a.m. at several locations, including two houses on a single block and a third home nearby. After the initial shootings, the suspect fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle. Officers caught up to the suspect in neighboring Bossier Parish, where the chase ended in a fatal exchange of gunfire with police.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith struggled to process the magnitude of the crime. “I couldn’t even begin to imagine how such an event could occur,” Smith said, promising that investigators will be “going through every piece of evidence at every scene” to find answers. Mayor Tom Arceneaux echoed that sentiment, calling it “the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport” and stating that the loss “affects the entire community.”
The impact of the shooting has sparked reactions from leaders across the country. Governor Jeff Landry and House Speaker Mike Johnson both shared their heartbreak for the families involved, while Senator Bill Cassidy extended his prayers to the Bossier Shreveport community as we mourn the innocent lives lost this morning.
Gun violence prevention advocates also spoke out, including Gabby Giffords, who called the event a devastating act of domestic gun violence. She noted that her heart is breaking for the families and survivors, stating that all of us should be outraged that we live in a country that routinely subjects our kids to such unimaginable violence.
As the community begins to process the loss, Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation into the officer involved shooting of the suspect.
