Former Cowboys Star Dez Bryant Says Police Held Him at Gunpoint in Front of His Daughters, Then Cited Him for Assault

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant is demanding answers after a heated confrontation in Texas ended with police pointing a firearm in his direction, handcuffing him in a parking lot, and issuing an assault citation while his young daughters witnessed the terrifying scene.

The 37-year-old former NFL wide receiver found himself at the center of a police encounter on Sunday, October 25, in Southlake, Texas. What reportedly began as an argument over reckless driving quickly escalated into a situation involving an alleged shooting threat, armed officers, and criminal allegations.

Video obtained by OutKick shows Bryant lying face down on the pavement in handcuffs alongside two other men as officers stand nearby. One officer can be seen holding a rifle aimed in their direction.

However, Bryant says the most disturbing part of the experience was having his children witness their father being treated that way.

“I was really more so concerned about my children, you know, looking at their dad, you know, being on the ground with a gun pointed at me,” Bryant explained during an interview with OutKick.

The former football star says the trouble started when two drivers allegedly cut him off while traveling through Southlake. Bryant claims their reckless behavior created a dangerous situation, prompting him to confront them about their driving.

Things intensified when the men arrived at the same restaurant parking lot, where Bryant says an argument erupted.

During the confrontation, Bryant alleges that one of the men began making statements suggesting he might shoot him. Bryant admitted that he responded angrily, warning the individual against pulling a weapon.

Despite the alleged threat, Bryant acknowledged that the man never actually displayed a firearm. Instead, he pulled out his cellphone and began recording their argument.

That decision led to physical contact with the phone, which would ultimately become a major part of the police investigation.

“I told him, you know, get the phone off me. So what I ended up doing is I knocked the phone out of his hand,” Bryant admitted.

The man allegedly threatened to contact law enforcement following the incident. Bryant says he welcomed police involvement because he believed officers would investigate the entire situation, including the reckless driving and alleged threats.

Unfortunately, the encounter took another turn once officers arrived.

Bryant says a responding officer drew a firearm and ordered everyone involved to the ground. The former athlete complied and was subsequently handcuffed alongside the other two men.

His girlfriend arrived with their daughters during the encounter and began recording the police response. Bryant says the children witnessed him restrained on the ground while an officer had a weapon drawn.

He was eventually placed inside a police vehicle as officers questioned those involved.

Rather than resolving the dispute in Bryant’s favor, officers issued him a citation for “Assault by Contact,” while the other men were reportedly allowed to leave.

The citation identifies the incident location as 2251 East Southlake Boulevard, near Chiloso Mexican Bistro. It also confirms that Bryant was not formally arrested, despite being handcuffed and temporarily detained.

Still, Bryant believes the investigation was handled unfairly.

He claims officers reviewed cellphone footage captured by the other individuals but failed to properly examine what happened before the recording began.

Bryant says he wanted authorities to retrieve nearby surveillance footage that might show the alleged dangerous driving and provide additional context surrounding the confrontation.

Instead, he felt officers focused primarily on his decision to knock the phone away.

He described the investigation as “very one-sided” and claimed an officer told him he needed to be “the bigger person.”

Bryant maintains that he acted in self-defense because he believed the situation had become threatening.

Under Texas Penal Code Section 22.01, intentionally or knowingly making physical contact that another person would reasonably consider offensive or provocative can constitute assault. The offense is generally classified as a Class C misdemeanor, which carries a potential fine of up to $500.

However, Texas also recognizes self-defense under Section 9.31 when someone reasonably believes force is immediately necessary to protect themselves from unlawful force. Verbal provocation alone does not automatically justify physical force.

That distinction could become important when Bryant challenges the citation, particularly because he acknowledges knocking the cellphone out of the other man’s hand.

His citation requires him to appear at Southlake Municipal Court on or before November 20, 2026, at 5 p.m.

Bryant has also emphasized that his criticism of the incident does not reflect his overall relationship with Southlake law enforcement. He says he has previously maintained positive relationships with local officers, including one connected to his son’s football team.

Nevertheless, he believes this particular encounter should have been investigated more thoroughly before authorities determined who was responsible.

Bryant spent eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboys between 2010 and 2017, earning three Pro Bowl selections and establishing himself as one of the franchise’s most recognizable receivers. He recorded 531 receptions, 7,459 receiving yards, and 73 receiving touchdowns during his Dallas career before eventually playing for the Baltimore Ravens in 2020.

Now, instead of discussing his football accomplishments, Bryant is preparing to address an assault allegation stemming from an incident he insists began with someone else’s dangerous behavior.

For the retired NFL star, the dispute goes beyond the citation. He wants a complete examination of the confrontation, especially after his daughters watched officers restrain him at gunpoint.
