An Ohio jury has convicted former church pastor and “American Idol” contestant Caleb Flynn of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, bringing a closely watched case involving an affair, disturbing text messages and an alleged staged home invasion to a dramatic conclusion.

According to the Associated Press, jurors in Miami County found the 40-year-old guilty Tuesday on all charges connected to Ashley’s February 2026 killing at the couple’s Tipp City home. The nine convictions include one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence. The jury deliberated for roughly two and a half hours before reaching its decision.Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt scheduled Flynn’s sentencing for October 5. He faces the possibility of life in prison without parole. His attorneys have indicated they plan to appeal.
Long before Caleb Flynn became the defendant in a murder trial, he briefly stepped into the national spotlight through “American Idol.”
According to CBS News, Flynn appeared during Season 12 of the singing competition in 2013 and received a golden ticket to Hollywood before being eliminated early in the competition. His appearance has taken on a haunting significance because Ashley was part of the story he shared with viewers at the time.
“Music is all I know, it’s what I live to do, and I love to sing, so that’s why I auditioned,” Flynn said in footage from the show cited by CBS News. “Maybe my wife kinda nudged me a little too.”
Flynn also openly praised Ashley during his “American Idol” appearance.
“I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty,” he said. “I love her.”
More than a decade later, prosecutors said Flynn was living a much different reality behind closed doors.
Flynn had worked in church ministry and became involved in an affair with Alleigha Botner, who testified for the prosecution during his murder trial. Botner was 24 at the time of the trial and said she met Flynn while working as a church intern. CBS reported that investigators uncovered more than 100,000 messages connected to their relationship. Botner has not been charged with a crime.
Prosecutors said those communications became critical evidence because they showed Flynn repeatedly discussing his hostility toward Ashley and, at times, explicitly talking about her death.
CBS News reported that in a February 2025 message to Botner, Flynn wrote, “I need her to die, to cheat again, to leave.” Weeks later, according to testimony reported by CBS, he wrote, “I hate her as well, and I want her gone.”
Another exchange presented to jurors was even more direct. When Botner asked, “What can I do?” Flynn responded, “Kill her.”
In another message introduced during the trial, Flynn wrote, “I was up until 4 a.m. last night … trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail. If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
Botner testified that Flynn discussed leaving Ashley multiple times beginning around August 2025. She eventually gave him a January 11, 2026 deadline to separate from his wife and stopped communicating with him until February 14, just two days before Ashley was killed.
Prosecutors also highlighted messages Flynn sent shortly before the shooting. Flynn wrote statements including “It’s happening,” “actions will come tomorrow,” “I choose you,” and “about to be free.” Botner testified that she understood his reference to “actions” to mean he was moving forward with a divorce.
Ashley Flynn, 37, was a schoolteacher and volleyball coach. Prosecutors said she was sleeping in the couple’s bed on February 16 when Flynn shot her twice in the back of the head.
CBS News reported that Flynn later called 911 and claimed an intruder had entered their Tipp City home and killed his wife. Police body camera footage shown during the case captured Flynn asking an officer, “Is she, is she gone, sir?”
Investigators, however, questioned the alleged break-in story.
FBI Special Agent Sarah Deamron testified that she did not find pry, kick, or ram marks on the outside of the door that would support a forced entry. Instead, she described damage on the inside trim of the door frame. Deamron testified that after examining roughly 75 doors that had been forced open during her career, the condition of the Flynn residence was not consistent with someone breaking into the home.
The Associated Press also reported that digital evidence showed movement during a period when Flynn claimed he had been asleep. The murder weapon was never recovered.
Flynn’s defense maintained throughout the trial that prosecutors could not prove he fired the fatal shots. His attorneys acknowledged his affair and damaging communications but argued those facts did not establish that he was Ashley’s killer.
“Caleb is not on trial for being a bad husband,” defense attorney Emily Smith told jurors during opening statements. “He’s not on trial for cheating. … A man can fail as a husband without being a murderer.”
The defense also raised questions about Botner, including the disappearance of her phone and work laptop before Ashley’s death. Botner testified that her phone stopped working after falling into water during a Florida trip and that her laptop was lost while traveling home, according to CBS News.
“I genuinely … it was completely innocent … anyone who knows me knows that I lose things,” Botner testified.
Video evidence showed Botner was at home when Ashley was killed. Botner testified that she initially told FBI agents she did not believe Flynn murdered his wife but later changed her view, calling Ashley’s death “way too much of a coincidence.”
Asked during the trial how she now felt about Flynn, Botner responded, “I hate him.”
After days of testimony centered on the affair, digital records, messages and the alleged staging of the crime scene, prosecutors urged jurors to focus on the evidence rather than Flynn’s claim that an unidentified intruder was responsible.
“He had a lawful way to leave, but he was too greedy,” Miami County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins told jurors during closing arguments. “People lie. Evidence doesn’t.”
The jury ultimately rejected Flynn’s intruder defense and returned guilty verdicts on all nine felony counts.
