August Alsina Checks Young Thug’s Past Gay Comments As Hip-Hop’s Masculinity Debate Comes Full Circle

August Alsina is turning Young Thug’s old “man code” comments into a bigger conversation about sexuality, judgment, and why some men still seem obsessed with how other men choose to love.

During a recent Instagram Live, the R&B singer addressed remarks Young Thug made during a September 2025 appearance on the “Perspektives With Bank” podcast, where the Atlanta rapper discussed gay men, “down low” men and what he described as a violation of manhood. Alsina said the comments felt personal.

“That comment, I took personal,” August said. “It’s time to start calling out stupid.” He questioned why Thug would focus on sexuality after recently regaining his freedom, adding, “Why is this s**t on your mind as a man that just got out of jail by the grace of God?”

Thug’s original comments came while he was discussing loyalty, betrayal and his fractured relationship with Gunna. In the interview, he said, “I feel like once you break a rule from your manhood, once you rat or once you turn gay.” He later tried to clarify that he had “nothing against gay people,” but said he would view someone differently if he believed they had presented themselves as straight and later came out. “I’ma just look at you like you broke a man code.”

The debate lands at a complicated moment for Young Thug, legal name Jeffery Williams. In October 2024, he pleaded guilty to gang, drug and gun charges in the long-running YSL case and was released from custody under strict probation terms. That history is partly why August’s response hit harder. To him, Thug had bigger things to talk about than another man’s sexuality.

The conversation also carries added weight because Alsina has faced years of public speculation about his own sexuality. In 2022, he appeared on VH1’s “The Surreal Life” and introduced a man he credited with teaching him about love and healing.

“Love showed up, but in a new way,” he said at the time.

Rather than choose a label, August later told Nick Cannon’s “Counsel Culture” that love is deeper than categories. “Love is much more complex than that and has much more depth.”

That is what makes this story bigger than one livestream. Young Thug has long challenged hip-hop’s image rules himself, from his genre-bending music to his famous “Jeffery” cover dress, which Pitchfork reported he chose himself. Now, August is calling out the contradiction: a culture that praises freedom in fashion and music, but still polices love.
