Mother of the late, great Tupac, Afeni Shakur, entered into a legal battle against Entertainment One in 2013 for unpaid royalties. Two years after her death, the estate settled with the entertainment company for royalties owed and Tupac’s unreleased catalog of music.
The lawsuit against Entertainment One was orchestrated by Afeni and demanded royalties owed to the estate for posthumous releases the company oversaw, somewhere around the seven-figure mark. The suit was also filed to recuperate unreleased master recordings Entertainment One somehow came into possession of and, of course, worth a lot of money.
Afeni passed away in 2016 but the trustees of Tupac’s estate kept the momentum going and ultimately won everything they were fighting for. Although the royalties awarded were not the full seven-figure requested, the payout is well into six-figures but the exact amount has yet to be disclosed. Now that Tupac’s unreleased music is back in respectable hands, who knows what could be in store for his musical legacy.
Could you imagine new Tupac next year!? Fingers crossed??
