A Manhattan nanny is suing the couple who hired her after, she says, the mother accidentally sent her a text with an offensive message about her race and then fired her on her first day, the New York Post reports.
According to the Post, Giselle was hired in 2016 to care for the couple’s newborn. On the day she arrived, the baby’s mother, Lynsey, reportedly meant to text her husband, Joel, but the message went to Giselle instead. It read, “NOOOOOOOOOOO ANOTHER BLACK PERSON.” The Post reports Lynsey sent it more than once. Lynsey said it was sent by mistake.
The couple then let Giselle go, with Lynsey reportedly saying she felt uncomfortable. Giselle is suing for discrimination and for the wages she says she was promised, $350 a day for a six month live in job. She told the Post the couple paid her for the one day she worked and sent her home in an Uber. “I want to show them, look, you don’t do stuff like that,” she said.
The couple says their actions were reasonable. Joel told the Post, “My wife had sent her something that she didn’t mean to say. She’s not a racist. We’re not racist people. But would you put your children in the hands of someone you’ve been rude to, even if it was by mistake? Your newborn baby? Come on.”
The lawsuit’s claims are allegations, and the case had not been decided at the time of this report.
