No marriage is perfect. Michelle Obama says she had to take #BarackObama to counseling to “fix him.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The forever First Lady stopped by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to discuss several topics including the huge success of her memoir “Becoming.” In doing so, Obama opened up about participating in marriage counseling. “Marriage is hard, even for us. We have a great relationship.”
Obama explained that while she and Barack have been married for 26 years, there was a point where she felt they needed professional help. “The thing about marriage counseling is, I was one of those wives who [thought], ‘I’m taking you to marriage counseling – so you can be fixed, Barack Obama,’” she recalled. “Because I was like, ‘I’m perfect.’ I was like, ‘Dr. X, please fix him.’”
However, she was surprised to find she was the one who actually needed fixing. “And then our counselor looked over at me. I was like, ‘What are you looking at? I’m perfect.’ Marriage counseling was a turning point for me understanding it wasn’t up to my husband to make me happy,” Michelle explained. “That I had to learn how to fill myself up and have to put myself up higher on my priority list.”
Obama says she opened up about her marriage in her book to help the younger generation understand relationships are not always easy. “I want young people to know that marriage is work,” she added, referencing how she and Obama’s marriage is often seen as #relationshipgoals. “Even the best marriages require work.”
“If you’re married for 50 years and 10 of them are horrible, you’re doing really good,” she emphasized. “Anybody would take those odds.”
