Almost immediately after Lifetime premiered the docuseries ‘Surviving R. Kelly,” R. Kelly’s attorney spoke to ABC News to address the abuse accusations against the artist.
“We know what happened, and we know those things didn’t happen,” the attorney, Steven Greenberg, stated in a pre-taped interview that aired on Friday’s episode of ’Good Morning America.’ “The man was not operating a harem, or a sex cult, or holding people hostage or anything like that,” he said.
When questioned about Kelly’s alleged legal actions, Greenberg said “hopefully he’ll sue Lifetime” for slander.
“People shouldn’t be able to do this to someone,” he continued.
He also confirmed that Kelly was indeed married to Aaliyah Haughton when she was just 15-years-old.
“He was married to her when she was 15. Elvis was married to Priscilla,” Greenberg said, referencing Elvis Presley and his bride Priscilla-who was 14 when they met and 21 when they married.
“My understanding is that she did not claim to be 15,” he stated. “And, in order to get married, she had to lie about her age.”
Greenberg supposed Kelly had “no idea” she was under the age of agreement.
Toward the conclusion of the interview, Greenberg spoke on Lady Gaga, and her attempt to speak out about Kelly. The entertainers released their song “Do What U Want” in 2013, in which Gaga sings, “Do what you want with my body.” In a remark posted to her social media accounts, the “A Star Is Born” actress regretted her “poor judgment” and reported her plans to remove the track from iTunes and other streaming platforms. She also promised to not work with Kelly again and referred the allegations towards him “horrifying and indefensible.”
“I stand behind these women 1000%, believe them, know they are suffering and in pain, and feel strongly that their voices should be heard and taken seriously,” she composed.
Greenberg assumed there were “no problems” when Gaga and Kelly collaborated in 2013.
“Now, there were rumors about Mr. Kelly back then,” he shared. “What has changed between then and now? I’ll tell you what’s changed between then and now. She says, ‘If I don’t disclaim my association with him, it might hurt my chance to get an Oscar.’ That’s exactly what it is.”
Gaga was not the only celebrity to criticize Kelly. John Legend also spoke out in the docuseries. Kelly’s family members have spoken out, additionally. His seceded daughter, Buku Abi, recently spoke up on social media, where she referred to him as a “monster.”
An investigation has been claimed to embark into the accusations made in the docu-series. Kelly has consistently denied any allegations of abuse or wrongdoings.
