Shortly after Lifetime aired the docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, the singer’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, spoke with ABC News in a pre taped interview that aired on Good Morning America.
Greenberg disputed the claims made in the series. He said Kelly was not running a harem or a sex cult and was not holding anyone against their will. He also said he hopes Kelly will sue Lifetime, arguing that people should not be able to do this to someone.
The attorney also confirmed that Kelly was married to Aaliyah when she was 15 years old. Greenberg claimed that Aaliyah did not tell Kelly her real age and that she had to lie about it to get married. According to Greenberg, Kelly had no idea she was underage.
Greenberg also addressed Lady Gaga, who announced she would pull her 2013 collaboration with Kelly, Do What U Want, from streaming services. Gaga said she regretted her poor judgment and called the allegations against Kelly horrifying and indefensible. Greenberg suggested the timing of her statement was tied to her awards season, a claim Gaga has not addressed.
Kelly has consistently denied the allegations of abuse and wrongdoing, and reports say an investigation into the claims made in the series has been opened.
