A Texas teenager has been convicted of fatally stabbing her 14-year-old best friend last year after an argument over sleeping arrangements.
The unidentified teen testified in court that the two girls got into an argument over text messages after she decided to go home due to too many girls being at Lightfoot‘s home. She testified that they fought over a slammed door through text messages, which escalated to arguments over borrowed clothes.
The teen claimed that Lightfoot showed up to her home at 2:30 a.m. and they got into another fight. That’s when the unidentified teen went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife to threaten Nyla.
“I stabbed her, and I made the worst mistake of my life. I wish I had been thinking clearly at the time. I pulled it out instantly and tried to stop her from running,” the teen stated, according to the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram.
Prosecutors argued that the teen had issues with her anger after she claimed to stab Lightfoot on accident.
“There is no arguing what her intent was. When she came outside with the knife, she was still in control. But not even her friend could stop her. She was only following through with what she had threatened twice,” Tarrant County prosecutor Jim Hudson said, according to the Star-Telegram.
The teen was facing up to 40 years in prison but was sentenced to 25. She will serve her time at a Texas Juvenile Justice Department until her 19th birthday when she will be transferred to an adult prison.
