A grand jury has reportedly been seated in Cook County, Illinois, in connection with a new tape that attorney Michael Avenatti says shows R. Kelly with an underage girl, according to CNN, which cited sources close to the case. Baller Alert has not independently confirmed the report.
Late last week, Avenatti said he turned the tape over to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. He claimed the conduct on it falls within the statute of limitations needed to charge Kelly, and said he is confident Kelly will be indicted and arrested in the coming days.
Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, said he had not been notified of any grand jury. “No one from law enforcement has contacted me or my client regarding any potential investigation,” Greenberg said. He added that grand jury proceedings are supposed to be secret by law, and that he is unaware of any proceedings.
Kelly has long denied allegations of abuse. He has not been charged in connection with the new tape.
