A Detroit man who built an urban garden in a neighborhood park has filed a lawsuit against three women he says made false reports about him to police, according to the Detroit Metro Times.
Marc began working on a garden at Hunt Park in 2017. The lawsuit claims that three neighbors, Deborah, Martha and Jennifer, reported him to police over what they described as illegal gardening. When that did not lead anywhere, the suit says, they made more serious accusations, including that he threatened one of them with a gun and was involved in a drive by shooting. The suit also says he was accused of being a pedophile because children from the neighborhood helped him garden.
Detroit police charged Marc with three counts of stalking. Those charges were later dropped. According to the Metro Times, the district court judge in the case said the women, rather than Marc, should have been sitting at the defendant’s table.
Marc and his attorney, Robert Burton-Harris, are seeking $300,000 in damages. The complaint alleges the women acted with the “ulterior purpose of obtaining control over Hunt Park.” These are claims made in a lawsuit and have not been decided by a court. A response from the women was not included in the reporting at the time.
Marc has said he plans to keep working on the project, called Liberated Farms, which is connected with a STEM program for local schools. New playground equipment is also planned for the park.
