Burger King's Real Meals

Burger King is facing major backlash after debuting its new “Real Meals” for Mental Health Awareness Month.

May is the month we highlight mental health awareness, and this week Burger King used its platform to take a shot at its longtime rival McDonalds while simultaneously promoting healthy minds with its new Real Meals. BK’s Real Meals are a new line of meals that are inspired by the natural everyday moods people experience. The meals were created to show “No one is happy all the time. And that’s OK,” categorized by Pissed Meal, Blue Meal, Salty Meal, YAAAS Meal, and DGAF Meal. Each box includes a Whopper, fries and a drink, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The new campaign comes as part of a collaboration with Mental Health America. The burger joint even flipped its popular slogan, “Have it your way” to #FeelYourWay, as the movement’s branded hashtag. In addition, the company posted a video of a man doing slam poetry with some of his lyrics being “happy” and “crappy.”

But social media users weren’t too enthused about the seemingly capitalistic move. Many called the food chain company insensitive for using mental health as a platform to promote its products while neglecting the deep-rooted issues within mental health.  One user wrote, “Wow thank you for raising awareness about “yasss,” it claims too many lives every year.” Another person wrote, Just punched a hole in my wall thinking about all the money I could have saved last year by just having Burger King instead of having to go to the psychiatric hospital.”

What do you think?
