A 26 year old Houston woman has been charged with criminally negligent homicide after the death of her 3 year old son, who was struck by her SUV earlier this month.
According to a statement from Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg, Lexus first told police she thought she had backed over a speed bump. Prosecutors say surveillance video from her apartment complex shows something different.
Authorities say the video shows Lexus driving toward her three young children as they ran toward the front of her vehicle in what was described as a game of chicken. Her son was hit and caught under the right tire, and prosecutors say the vehicle then ran over him a second time with the rear tire. He died from his injuries at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.
“Cars aren’t toys,” Ogg said in the statement.
Lexus is being prosecuted by the Vehicular Crimes Division of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The reports did not say whether she has entered a plea, and the charge is an allegation until proven in court.
