In another day of being black, a man was arrested for following his doctor’s order to go for a walk, after recovering from pneumonia.
24-year-old Shaquille Dukes was admitted to the hospital in Freeport for pneumonia and was advised by doctors to go for a walk outside as long as he remained on the hospital’s property.
According to Dukes, a security officer claimed that he was trying “to leave the hospital to sell the IV equipment on eBay.” After a conversation with the security officer, the police came and arrested the 24-year-old for “attempted theft of the IV equipment.”
Dukes IV was removed while on the sidewalk but not by doctors, according to Dukes Facebook post. He continued in the post by stating that he told officers he was being treated for pneumonia and they simply did not care.
“I told the Sgt I was being treated for pneumonia and asthma, and his words were ‘I don’t care why you’re here, you’re going to jail.’ They took my rescue inhaler and began to transport me to the city lockup, while in transit I began to have a seizure, and subsequently an asthma attack, I pleaded with officers for almost 4 minutes to retrieve my inhaler from the transporting officer, and finally, when I became unresponsive, it miraculously appeared.“
Police have since responded, saying Dukes, his brother, and friend was arrested for disorderly conduct toward a security officer and police. However, authorities say security guard did call police because he believed Dukes was trying to steal the equipment.
“Our investigation revealed that at no time did any doctor or nurse give that patient or any patient permission to leave the hospital while still hooked to an IV machine,” Freeport police officials said.
“It was determined that he was likely not trying to steal any of the property. But the charges were supported for disorderly conduct with their actions toward the security guard,” Freeport Police Chief Todd Barkalow told ABC News.
Freeport Police says they urge the public to reserve judgment while a complete review of the incident is performed.
