There’s always a lot of hype leading up to Christmas, and then the next few days breeze by unnoticed as everyone seems to rush right into their New Year’s plans. The time leading up to the new year is an excellent opportunity to still enjoy time with family and start new traditions. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Celebrate Kwanzaa
Contrary to popular belief, you can be black, love Jesus, and still expand your horizons to incorporate a love for your own heritage. After the hustle, bustle, and commercialism of Christmas, why not educate yourself and celebrate Kwanzaa too? The week-long celebration begins the day after Christmas and lasts through January 1st. It incorporates a gift exchange, feasts, and principles that honor family, community, and culture.
Go Shopping
Post-holiday shopping is chaotic, but if you and your family love a good sale, then it’s also the perfect time to get out there with the crowds. Grab all of the gift cards and money you received as Christmas gifts, and head over to your favorite shops while you still can. With the increased popularity of e-commerce, going to the mall will soon become a thing of the past. Get out there and enjoy it while you still can.
Volunteer Together
If you’re fortunate enough to have some time off from work or just want to express your gratitude for having good health, resources, and a roof over your head, find an organization to volunteer with. You and your family can make it a tradition to give back in some way to those who are less fortunate or need some human kindness. It’s a great way to spend your time at any point of the year, especially if you want to instill a sense of value, appreciation, and purpose in the younger members of your family.
Go On A Vacation Together
As a society, Christmas is really a day geared for the kids. With the increasing number of people choosing to wait or forego parenthood altogether, many people don’t have a lot of little ones to celebrate the day with. If this is your situation, instead of spending money on many gifts, why not pool your resources to enjoy a vacation experience of a lifetime together?
Host A Vision Board Or Affirmation Party
New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap because people rarely stick to their plans. However, setting affirmations and creating vision boards is a fun way to set your goals to paper, and over time, you can watch them manifest. Whether you decide to do this with family, friends, or make a girl’s night of it, what better way to spend tour time together than by setting your New Years’ intentions around those you love?
