“Queen & Slim,” star Jodie Turner says she won’t be raising her children in the United States because of the “overt” white supremacy.
Turner and her actor husband #JoshuaJackson are about to welcome their first child, and they’ve decided that the “home of the free” will not be a home for their children. In a new interview with the Sunday Times, which as posted last weekend, the 33-year-old opened about her and Jackson’s relationship and shared that the couple would be raising their child out of the States.
“The racial dynamics over here are fraught. White supremacy is overt. It’s the reason I don’t want to raise my kids here: I don’t want my kids to grow up doing active shooter drills at school,” said Turner. But even Turner’s own home of England isn’t her go-to. “England has gone off the rails. So I was thinking, maybe Canada.” Turner and Jackson were wed last month, but the two haven’t confirmed any details about the matrimony.
“I haven’t said to anybody, ‘Yeah, we got married,’” she said. “People are assuming whatever they want, but when people tell me ‘Congratulations,’ I say ‘Thank you.’” Turner said that she was raised as one of the few Black girls in her school growing up, and she was excited to see more Black people when she moved to America. “So I was really excited when I came to America about meeting black people. But it was a huge culture shock, because I was rejected by the black community. They were like, ‘You talk like a white girl.’ People would call me an Oreo. All I wanted was acceptance,” she said.
Turner even said she tried to immolate “Black American” speech, saying she “would practice in the mirror, talking in a way that I thought was like black American: cutting you down with my words in five seconds if you came for me.” The actress revealed she still faces these issues today and scrutiny for being in an interracial relationship. “There was this wave of people who were upset that I was possibly married to a white man. In America, interracial dating or marriage is not something that is as accepted.”
”Certain people feel strongly against it, in both communities. I felt it from the black community. It is so complicated. I don’t want to give it too much energy. The horrific things that people were saying, it makes you. … I’m learning there are certain things I have to really keep for myself,” Turner said.⠀⠀⠀
But that doesn’t bother her, as she said she and Jackson are “obsessed” with each other. “We are obsessed with each other,” said Turner-Smith. “Joshua tells me every day, ‘The way you’re handling this is incredible.’ He’s more tired than I am.”
