A Facebook Live broadcast captured the sounds of multiple gunshots and people running in panic at a downtown Austin protest late Saturday night, the ABC 7 News reports.
Good Morning America identified Garrett Foster, the one man who died during the incident. Reports claim he approached a vehicle during the gunfire.
The video captured by journalist Hiram Gilberto shows the march entering an intersection before a confrontation took place in the middle of the crowd. Then, at least five quick gunshots were let out.
A witness told the Austin American-Statesman that a driver honked his horn and sped at protesters before opening fire. Foster was pronounced dead at the hospital.
One witness says Foster was carrying a rifle and approached the vehicle, that is when he was then shot by the driver, who drove away.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Foster’s mother, Sheila Foster shared a different account. According to her, her son and his fiancée Whitney Mitchell, a quadruple amputee had attended many peaceful protests. That night she claims her son was pushing Mitchell’s wheelchair before the shooting.
“And this gentleman got out of his car and started firing shots, and my son was shot three times,” she said.
Austin police spokesperson Katrina Ratliff says the suspect has been arrested and is cooperating with police.
