A video of Maryland police officers pulling a Black passenger out of a car and arresting him after he declined to show identification went viral on TikTok, and police have now explained their side.
According to TMZ and local reports, a man named Antoine was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend, Heather, when Anne Arundel County police stopped it in Deale, Maryland. Police said the driver was going 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. Heather recorded the encounter, and the video shows officers pulling at Antoine as he holds on to the car while he can be heard saying he is a human being. A child’s car seat is visible in the back, and Heather can be heard crying.
Police said officers learned during the stop that Antoine had two active arrest warrants for failing to appear in court. The department said officers asked him numerous times to get out of the car before physically removing him. He was charged with resisting or interfering with arrest and held without bond, according to WTOP. Police said he did not report any injury. Heather received a ticket for the speeding violation and was allowed to leave.
Viewers online questioned why a passenger was asked for ID during a routine speeding stop. Police did not say why identification was requested from the passenger.
