Federal prosecutors have charged a man who calls himself a member of the Boogaloo Bois, an extremist anti government movement, with taking part in a riot during the unrest in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd, the Justice Department announced on Friday.
According to CNN and the Justice Department, a man named Ivan, 26, was arrested in Texas on Wednesday and is charged with one count of riot. A federal criminal complaint alleges he was at the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct between May 27 and 28, when the building was set on fire during protests.
The FBI says it obtained video that shows him firing 13 rounds from an AK 47 style rifle into the Third Precinct while people believed to be looters were still inside. Investigators say the video then shows him high fiving another person and yelling about justice for Floyd.
The complaint also alleges that he is connected online to Steven, another person tied to the Boogaloo movement who is charged in California in connection with the killing of law enforcement officers. Prosecutors also say that on June 3 Austin police stopped a truck in which he was a passenger and found a tactical vest with loaded magazines and several firearms inside.
The Justice Department noted that the charge is only an accusation and that he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. No response from him or his attorney was available at the time of the announcement.
