Georgia’s Lake Lanier At The Center Of Multiple Ghost Stories

Do you believe in ghosts? The residents who visit a lake northeast of Atlanta do.

According to CNN, the spooky tales surrounding Lake Lanier include a long-dead woman who roams the lake in a blue dress and mysterious arms reaching out for swimmers.

Located in the north Georgia mountains’ foothills, the lake was created in the 1950s by flooding communities, including a graveyard. The US Army Corps of Engineers created the reservoir to provide Atlanta and surrounding counties with power and water.

The lake is a popular hotspot for boating and water sports. However, more than 200 people have died on the lake in accidents since 1994.

Before it was flooded, the community had a cemetery. Cesar Yabor, a spokesman for the US Army Corps of Engineers, told CNN that while the Corps made every effort to identify and move marked graves, it’s likely that some unmarked ones were left behind.

“While the Corps made every effort at the time to locate unmarked burials,” he said, “the limited capabilities of the time make it probable that unanticipated finds of human remains are possible.”

He says the remains possible date back to antebellum and Civil War periods or of Native American origin.

One of Lake Lanier’s most popular spooky stories involves a fatal car accident. According to legend, a Ford sedan carrying two women drove off a bridge in April of 1958 into the water. One of the ghosts is believed to belong to a woman from the accident. She has been dubbed the “Lady of the Lake” and roams the bridge at night in a blue dress.

Divers have reported seeing disturbing things under the water over the years. One diver told local media that he sometimes would reach out and feel human body parts in the lake, such as an arm or leg.

The popular Netflix show “Ozark” has filmed scenes on the famous lake, one of the country’s most visited.
