“Selena” Film Producer Sues Selena Quintanilla’s Father And Netflix Over New Upcoming Series

Selena Quintanilla’s father and Netflix are being sued over the upcoming series based on the late Latin music legend’s life.

Moctesuma Esparza, one of the producers of the 1997 film “Selena,” has filed a lawsuit against Selena’s father, Quintanilla’s father, 81, claiming that he violated a contract agreement was signed in 1995. Esparza claims that the contract allegedly gave him rights to Selena’s life stories, TMZ reports.

Esparza wants $1 million for breach of contract from the singer’s father, and he’s also suing Netflix for allegedly ignoring his deal with Abraham while in the midst of creating “Selena: The Series.” The lawsuit was filed on Nov. 6, and in it, Esparza claims that he and Abraham discussed making a follow-up mini-series after the film’s success. The conversations between the two men reportedly happened in 1998.

Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, was also named in the lawsuit because she was reportedly also in the talks about creating a storyline that portrayed a “young” Selena.  Page Six reports that there is a management conference scheduled for Feb. 23.
