Chicago Family Says One Haircut Caused Death Of Their Parents From Covid

A Chicago family is dealing with the loss of their parents from the coronavirus after one family member got a haircut.

Mike and Carol Bruno – who were married for 59 years – died 10 days apart earlier this month.

Their son Joe Bruno got a haircut from his sister, who works in a hair salon. She tested negative for Covid just before Thanksgiving.

His sister quarantined for days before going to his apartment – where he lived with his mother Carol – to give him a haircut.

“I did not hug my mom,” Joe told WECT.com. “I did not hug my sister. My sister cut my hair. She was masked, and all the windows were open. We were distanced in my apartment, and then they left. They were over for maybe 40 to 45 minutes. Later that evening, my sister started to feel symptoms. About three days later, I started to feel symptoms.”

Both of his parents, Carol, 79, and their father, Mike, developed symptoms days later. She died on December 14, and Mike followed 10 days later.

“We never thought this would happen to our family, and it did,” Joe said. “This virus is really unforgiving and just attacks in really vicious ways.”

Her obituary said, “Carol was a strong woman who overcame many challenges throughout her life. She loved to cook, was a devoted wife, amazing mother and a gracious woman. Carol spread joy to all those around her and will be missed greatly.”
