The NBA fined Kyrie Irving $50,000 for violating health and safety protocols. Irving was seen on social media at a family gathering without a mask.  The NBA prohibits players from attending indoor social gatherings with 15 or more people.

“Without a doubt, the organization’s disappointment with not having any one of our players, in this particular case Kyrie, not amongst us, not in the trenches with us and so forth,” Sean Marks, general manager of the Brooklyn Nets, said. “So I don’t want to speculate and say why he’s out and so forth. I’ve had conversations with him and I’ll continue to have conversations and we look forward to him being back in the gym, where he will address this.”

According to the NBA, for each game Irving misses, he forfeits his salary — he has missed two games and has lost $900,000.

“Regarding Kyrie Irving and when he’ll be back with the team: Part of that is up to the NBA, and we’re waiting for them to come to a ruling on the Health & Safety protocol,” Marks said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a ruling soon. I have talked to Kyrie. I know he’s excited about getting back on the court with his teammates as soon as possible.”

Back in December, Irving was fined $25,000 by the NBA for not speaking to the press. If Irving test negative for COVID-19, he can play in the Nets v. Orlando game.
