A woman charged in connection with the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol has asked a federal judge for permission to travel to Mexico later this month, and the request has sparked a debate on social media.
According to USA Today, lawyers for Jenny, a small business owner from Midland, Texas, asked the court to let her travel to Mexico’s Riviera Maya from February 18 to 21 for a prepaid, work related bonding retreat with her employees and their spouses.
Jenny is on pretrial release after being charged with two misdemeanors, including disorderly conduct and entering a federal building without permission. Her release conditions bar her from leaving Texas except for court dates and meetings with her attorneys or pretrial officer, so a judge must approve any international travel. She has not been convicted.
In a Monday court filing, her lawyer noted she has no prior criminal history and has stayed in contact with her attorneys and the pretrial services officer, who did not object to the plan. Prosecutors reportedly took “no position” on the request.
That detail drew reaction online, where some users questioned whether other defendants would receive the same treatment and the phrase “white privilege” trended on Twitter. A judge had not ruled on the request at the time of this report.
