President Joe Biden is looking to introduce a $1.8 trillion spending and tax plan to assist children, families, students, and seniors.

In this new bill, $225 billion will be put towards top-of-the-line child care and making sure that families only pay a portion of their income toward child-care fees, based on a sliding scale. Another $225 billion will go towards creating a national comprehensive paid family and medical leave program, while $200 billion will be allocated for free universal preschool for all three and four-year-old children. $45 billion is proposed to go towards meeting child nutritional needs. This includes expanding entree to the summer EBT program. This expansion will assist many low-income families with purchasing meals for children outside of the school year.

Other funding will go towards assisting students in community colleges. $109 billion will go into two years of free community college for students and nearly $85 billion toward Pell Grants, increasing the maximum award by almost $1,400 for low-income college attendees.

Additionally, a $62 billion grant program will be proposed to increase college retention and graduation rates. In comparison, another $39 billion will be allocated to provide two years of supported tuition for HBCU scholars whose families bring in less than $125,000.

The massive package comes as the White House proposed $2 trillion in funding over an eight-year period.

The new proposal also includes almost $1 trillion in investments and $800 billion in tax credits that will be distributed over a decade and will be offset in 15 years in large part by increasing the amount of taxes paid by America’s wealthy.

“These are investments that we can’t afford not to make as a country,” a senior administration official stated during a conference call with reporters on Tuesday night.
