Mississippi School Under Fire For Last Minute Changes To Valedictorian And Salutatorian Decision After Announcing Two Black Females Were Chosen

In West Point, Mississippi, a school is under fire for making a controversial last-minute change to its class ranking system.

On Monday, the West Point Consolidated School District announced that two Black females had been named the Class of 2021’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Ikeria Washington would be Valedictorian, and Layla Temple was named Salutatorian.

But on Thursday, hours before graduation, the school made a change. In a now-deleted Facebook post, the school said there are two methods to determine a student’s class rank. Quality Point Average (QPA) and Grade Point Average (GPA). The school claims Washington and Temple had the highest QPA. Therefore the school would also be recognizing the two students with the highest GPA.

“The two students with the highest QPA are Ikeria Washington and Layla Temple. The students with the highest GPA are Dominic Borgioli and Emma Berry,” the school wrote. The WPCSD feels it necessary to recognize four seniors at graduation.”

One Twitter user, who identifies as a West Point High School alumni, called the school out for making the change. She believes the move was racially motivated.

“So my high school had a black valedictorian and Salutatorian AND THEY WERE FEMALES !! and now since a white person was mad about it,” she wrote. “They decide to call the girls back and let them know that it will now be two valedictorians and salutatorians. This is wrong!”

Another user posted a Facebook post from someone who claimed to be Temple’s older sister. She blasted the change as unacceptable and “disrespectful.”

“Not only is this not acceptable, it’s disrespectful to the actual hard work both young ladies put in to earn their spots at the top of the class,” she said. “These two beautiful ladies dominated their class and are the BEST OF THE BEST IN CLASS 2021. They alone should represent WPHS as such.”

Temple’s mom also weighed in on social media, calling the change “bullshit.” She also claims the school changed the white kids’ grades to satisfy their parents.

“I’m tired of the excuses! It’s over & done with, but you are going to call it what the hell it is… Bullshi^%!” Bradshaw-Temple wrote.

“You changed the grades of white kids to satisfy white parents that wasn’t going to accept that 2 black kids grades were better than theirs… just own it!!!” she added.

The school has since deactivated all of its social media accounts.

What the WPCSD is claiming about page 10 of the student handbook does not add up! That statement says nothing about a GPA, QPA, VALEDICTORIAN, or SALUTATORIAN. That statement talks about a numerical average.

I’d like to know what was used in prior years?, why did they institute weighted courses if they didn’t honor them?, etc. Then, the district deactivated its FB page, have no student handbook on its website, and refuses to be transparent. There is certainly more to this story! Please probe deeper!

What has been used every year at WPHS is the students’ GPA (like every school in America). The school made a mistake by awarding by the QPA. Instead of taking the award from the two with the highest QPA they decided to also award the two with the honor. The fact is that if a mistake wasn’t made the two with the highest QPA would have had nothing (just like every year at every school). Instead of appreciating being able to list the unearned accomplishment on their resumes and college applications, they are being supported by a group of people that would rather take the award from the two that actually earned the honor.

What you just said doesn’t make ANY sense, lol! If the school uses the same method every year, how in the world did they all of a sudden “make a mistake and change that method this year…when we ALL know schools be tracking who is slated to receive what award ALL senior year (I mean, graduates do have to write speeches and all)…and that NO ONE noticed until AFTER senior night….this is the logic you going with?…okay

They did track it and the two students with the highest GPA expected to win and were confused when they didn’t. Educate yourself before commenting. Never mind, I will educate you now. A first year counselor did the calculations and turned in the names based on the QPA. The counselor was wrong.

BTW. If you listened to the speeches it was obvious the two with the highest GPA had excellent speeches already written and they delivered them flawlessly. So your first grade level theory is ignorant at best.

          OUCH!

Your racism and your feelings don’t change facts. Sorry.

I think that you don’t know what QPA is. If you did you wouldn’t be so arrogant and not understand why people are confused

REAL FACTS: THERE WAS NO MISTAKE!!!The school did it correctly the first time. Those white students was OUTSMARTED by the two black students. Then harassed, intimidated, AND pressured the Superintendent into getting what they wanted. GO SOMEWHERE WITH THE BS!!!

The QPA includes points for honors and AP classes which is why the black girls were rated higher. Simply because they took harder classes that provided more credit. No shame to any of the kids because they all worked hard.

The awards have never been awarded by QPA in the history of WPHS or any other school.

All you had to do was google “QPA” and you would know you are 100% wrong. QPA has zero to do with the difficulty of the classes taken. Come on at least try to educate yourself on this matter.

BTW. The school took down the Facebook page because of the uninformed and vulgar remarks being left by people that would rather award by race than to give the honor to the two students with the highest GPA. I’m sorry your platform was deleted.

The rules weren’t changed. The two with the highest GPA were awarded the honors like always. Due to the fault of the first year counselor the two students with the highest QPA were also awarded even though they shouldn’t have been. Keep up!!

BTW. There will be no lawsuit because the people complaining don’t want a court stating their cause is bogus.

Nice post! Well other than ignoring blacks have handouts at every level so they can attempt to be competitive (how much farther would you be behind on a true level playing ground?). Your narrative also doesn’t fit the mentality of your precious Democratic Party (that you continue to allow to enslave you because you love government checks).

BTW….pull your slip down, your jealousy of white people is showing.

      BOOM!!!
