A photo of Harambe, the famous gorilla who became an internet sensation after he died in 2016, will be sold at auction as an NFT.
According to BBC, the photo up for grabs was taken by the gorilla’s official photographer Jeff McCurry the same day the 17-year-old silverback first arrived at the Cincinnati Zoo.
Harambe’s photo has been shared online over five billion times.
The gorilla was fatally shot five years ago after he grabbed and dragged a three-year-old who fell into his enclosure, Complex reported.
Harambe’s death made global headlines, and he soon became a social media celebrity with memorable hashtags made in his honor.
NFT’s are on the rise.
The gorilla picture isn’t the first online sensation to be auctioned off. This year alone, the web video “Nyan Cat” was bought for $600,000, “Bad Luck Brian” sold for $36,000, “Disaster Girl” went to nearly $500,000 in April, and most recently was the hefty purchase of the “Charlie Bit My Finger” video was auctioned for more than $760,000.
