For many, the opportunity to go to college is the opportunity to change their lives and potentially their family’s lives as well. A college education is viewed as the ticket to laying the foundation to their dreams, gaining entrance is a feat within itself, but staying the course is a test of determination and perseverance. Â Even with federal aid, additional jobs and scholarships, an overwhelmingly increasing population of students fall through the financial cracks subsequently dropping out. Additional support is desperately needed.
To combat this growing issue, Big Sean gifted Detroit’s Wayne State University’s HIGH (Helping Individuals Go Higher) Program $25,000 to aid in the establishment of an endowment. These funds will be specifically used to help those students battling homelessness. Â HIGH provides resources including, but not limited to housing support, school supplies, textbooks, clothing, transportation and child-care assistance. The program’s focus is “To help financially stressed students at Wayne State University reach their goal to graduate.”
The issue of student homelessness extends beyond campus living. Many students can’t afford housing while in school and those that can sometimes have no home to return to during school breaks. It is wonderful to know, Big Sean is helping out.
