T-Mobile is scrambling to investigate a possible data breach that may have affected over 100 million customers.
The investigation comes after an anonymous author posted on an underground forum that they were selling 30 million social security numbers and driver’s licenses for $277,895 in bitcoin. The remaining data is being sold separately and includes phone numbers and physical addresses. While the post did not specifically say that they obtained the data from T-Mobile, Motherboard was shown samples of the stolen data and confirmed that it contained T-Mobile customer information. The seller also told Motherboard that they’d compromised multiple servers related to the phone company.
The seller stated that the data has since been backed up in “multiple places.” However, they said they no longer have access to the servers.
If this latest hack proves to be authentic, it will serve as another blow to the company, which has already suffered multiple cyber attacks in recent months. In February, an undisclosed amount of customers were victims of SIM swap attacks. This was just two months after a separate hack exposed its customers’ proprietary network data.
“We are aware of claims made in an underground forum and have been actively investigating their validity,” T-Mobile confirmed in a statement.
