Lafayette City Court Judge Michelle Odinet is in hot water after a video recorded in her home over the weekend containing racial slurs surfaced Monday.
The City Court Judge asked for “understanding, forgiveness, patience, and prayers” for her and her son as the request for her resignation grew after the video went viral.
Judge Michelle Odinet confirmed the footage was filmed in her home this weekend. In the video, her family gathered to watch home security footage from an armed burglary that took place Saturday in their driveway.
Although none of the speakers are seen in the video, multiple voices are heard saying “n*****” repeatedly.
“And mom’s yelling n*****, n*****,” says one male voice, to which another female voice responds: “We have a n *****, It’s a n*****, like a roach.”
“Lost his wallet,” says one voice. “That’s my phone where it fell out,” says another. “Going get the gun,” can be heard. “The dude had a phone on him,” chimes in a female voice. “I should have taken his phone from him, that f****** ass****.”
A 59-year-old Black male was arrested and charged with two counts of simple burglary in connection with the incident. According to the Daily Advertiser, a spokesperson for the Lafayette Police department said Tuesday there was no indication that the suspect had a weapon.
“I was given a sedative at the time of the video. I have zero recollection of the video and the disturbing language used during it. Anyone who knows me and my husband knows this is contrary to the way we live our lives,” said Odinet.
Odinet was elected to the bench just more than a year ago. She and Lafayette Parish Coroner Kenneth Odinet Jr have four children together.
As condemnations mount, the Lafayette Judge likely won’t be removed without resigning.
