Derek Chauvin

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted for killing George Floyd has now pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges.

The ex-cop, who previously pleaded not guilty, appeared in federal court in person on Wednesday morning to change his plea to guilty.

He’s been charged with two counts of depriving Floyd of his rights for pinning his knee against Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes and failing to provide him with medical care during the May 2020 arrest.

During Wednesday’s hearing, federal prosecutors asked for Chauvin to be sentenced to 20 to 25 years in federal prison, with five years of supervised probation and agreeing to never work again as a police officer. Chauvin’s federal sentence would also be served concurrently with his state sentence.

He is currently serving a  22 1/2-year state prison sentence following his conviction for Floyd’s murder.
