The 10-year-old Florida girl who fatally shot a woman who was involved in a fight with her mother on Memorial Day could be charged with murder, authorities said Tuesday.
The child was taken into custody Tuesday by the Orlando Police Department and taken to a juvenile facility. She could face a second-degree murder charge. According to police, prospective charges have been referred to State Attorney Monique Worrell’s office.
Worrell said, “This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career.”
Lashun Rodgers, 41, was fatally shot on May 30 in an apartment complex when she got into an argument with the child’s mother, Lakrisha Isaac, 31.
The victim’s boyfriend told cops he and Rodgers were grilling at the apartment complex when Isaac confronted her about a previous issue. He claimed Isaac approached Rodgers and started an argument, then threw the first punch. He said Rodgers then hit her back. The man says he then grabbed his girlfriend when she went to “re-engage” Isaac again, and that was when the child fired two shots.
Rodgers’ boyfriend told cops the girl said, “She shouldn’t have hit my momma,” while still holding the firearm.
Rodgers was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Shortly after the incident, Isaac was arrested and charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault with a firearm, and child negligence.
Worrell said her office would look into the case and analyze “all the facts,” such as the child’s age and the circumstances surrounding it. So far, no charges have been decided.
“However, we anticipate that whatever charges we eventually file, if any, will ensure she receives the interventions necessary to address her behavior, help her change and grow, and ensure the public’s safety going forward,” she said. “We encourage the public to remember—no matter your feelings surrounding this tragedy—this is still a child.”
