New York Fashion Week 2022 is officially over, which means no more runway looks and cool streetwear styles. The runways this season featured over 25% Black designers, meaning Black designers are a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to the Black in Fashion Council, these Black fashion designers made impressions this year at New York Fashion Week:

Sergio Hudson:

Sergio Hudson debuted Collection 10. The designer is no stranger to New York Fashion Week but surely outdid himself this time. Collection 10 premiered at the Léman Ballroom in Manhattan and was much more fun and lively than his past collections. With more vibrant colors and bold prints, Hudson mixed it up.

LaQuan Smith:

Inspired by “wind, air, and movement,” LaQuan Smith’s collection is serving legs, hips, and body! Smith says, “My Spring/Summer 2023 collection is about wind, air, and movement. I took a trip this summer to Morocco and was completely inspired by the weather and the rich colors in the spice market. The collection also has many elements of eroticism – poetic and romantic.” Smith has worked with celebrities like Beyoncé, Jeniffer Lopez, Kehlani, and more.

Theophilio:

Edvin Thompson x Theophilio Spring/Summer 2022 collection gave the 70s with flare bottoms and carnival vibes with wild prints. The designer’s latest collection paid tribute to Black culture and Jamaican heritage.

Jason Rembert’s latest collection is a special thanks to women. He told ESSENCE, “For this upcoming NYFW, I took my time with this collection. I hope that the women I’m inspired by and admire feel seen.” His runway clothes featured fun textures, lively colors, and women!

Felisha Noel says her NYFW collection “drew inspiration from the ebbs and flows of life and its ups and downs.” Making Black culture look expensive, the staple from her line led by an all-black team includes the literal money-making gown called Dre$$. The dress represents the potential $1.6 million women are missing in retirement. Though the dollar bills were faux, the gown will remain on display at Broadway and Grand St. until Tuesday, September 20th.

Sammy B:

It was Samantha Black’s first time at New York Fashion Week this year. The line featured a twist on streetwear, showing off her Jamaican heritage by mixing with yellows, greens, and oranges. Expect to see more from this emerging designer.

Dur Doux:

Dur Doux was founded by mother and daughter Cynthia Burt and Najla. The luxury lifestyle brand embraces femininity and even had a shocking star walk the runway, DiDi Richards. The WNBA star stunned the runway in an orange tie-dye dress with dramatic-sized jewelry.
