Popeyes may be well-known for its chicken sandwich, but now they are taking it up a notch.
On Tuesday, the chicken giant announced they were bringing the Blackened Chicken Sandwich to menus as a permanent fixture. The new variation is essential, as it is the first variation of their chicken sandwich lineup. Prior to the unique flavor, customers could only get the handheld in a crispy fried breast. However, with the Blackened Chicken Sandwich, the filet is not as breaded as its predecessor, spending 12 hours marinating in the rich seasonings before being served on a warm brioche bun, topped with pickles and a choice of mayo or spicy Cajun sauce. To liven things up a bit, Popeyes will allow customers to add bacon and Havarti cheese to its sandwiches for an extra $1.50.
Popeyes President Sami Siddiqui is pleased with the new version, calling it “a lighter option that is perfect for every day.” They first began testing the blackened remix of the sandwich in 2021Â but did not keep it in restaurants until now.
The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich gained significant popularity when it was first introduced in 2019. It quickly became a social media sensation and sparked much discussion and comparisons with other fast food chains’ chicken sandwiches. This sparked some competition, with rivals such as Wendy’s scrambling to challenge the cherished meal, which has become a staple item on Popeyes’ menu, a popular choice for chicken sandwich enthusiasts.
The Blackened Chicken Sandwich has begun popping up at locations across the country and can be ordered via the website or in person.
