X, formally known as Twitter, has restored Kanye West’s account, thanks to Elon Musk.
On Saturday, the social media platform reestablished Kanye’s account after a seven-month suspension. According to the Wall Street Journal, Kanye cannot monetize his account. Additionally, no advertisements will be displayed alongside his posts.
In December, the musician’s account was suspended due to violating the platform’s rules on inciting violence. This action came after Kanye made multiple anti semitic comments, including a threat towards “JEWISH PEOPLE,” which led to severe consequences. As a result, numerous business agreements, such as partnerships with Adidas and luxury fashion house Balenciaga, quickly fell apart.
Twitter has consistently been entangled in debates concerning content moderation, with its CEO Elon Musk identifying as a “free speech absolutist.” When Musk agreed to purchase the company, he expressed the intention to approach content deletion and permanent bans with great caution. However, following Kanye’s suspension, Musk tweeted that despite his efforts, West once more violated their rule against incitement to violence.
Twitter’s Violent Speech Policy strictly prohibits incitement and glorification of violence. The policy also prohibits any form of wishing harm or making threats towards others. It remains unclear whether Kanye submitted an appeal for his account or if there were other reasons for the reactivation. As of now, the musician has not made any posts on the platform since the reactivation.
