LeBron James' I Promise School Addresses Concerns Over Eighth Graders Failing State Math Exams Since 2020

LeBron James’ I Promise School is facing backlash for delivering “discouraging” test scores.

In 2018, the I Promise School became a part of the Akron Public Schools system. However, since then, several years have elapsed without the eighth-grade students achieving passing scores on Ohio’s math test. According to a report, the last time these students passed the state’s math test was during their third-grade year. An Akron Public Schools official characterized the test results as “discouraging.”

As stated on its website, the I Promise School’s mission is to assist students who are already struggling and at risk of slipping through the cracks. Despite being classified as a public school, it collaborates closely with the LeBron James Family Foundation. The school receives the same amount of funding from local, state, and federal sources as any other public school. However, there are concerns among certain Akron school officials due to the reported low academic performance of its students.

“For me as a board member, I just think about all the resources that we’re providing,” School board President Derrick Hall said. “And I just, I’m just disappointed that I don’t think, it doesn’t appear like we’re seeing the kind of change that we would expect to see.”

On Monday, the LeBron James Family Foundation issued a statement reaffirming its unwavering dedication and commitment to its mission.

“Because this work requires a long-term commitment, hard work, and a lot of love and care,” the statement. “And that’s what we bring each and every day because the I Promise School is more than a school. We’re here for the ups and downs, and will continue to wraparound our students and their entire families so they can be successful in school and in life, no matter the challenges and obstacles that come their way.”
