TikTok users may soon be paying a monthly fee to enjoy the app ad-free.

Android Authority was the first to unveil this new paid level. In the test, which doesn’t seem to be visible to all users, there is a “Standard” and an “Ad-free” option. Those opting for the “Standard” choice can continue enjoying the app in its current state. However, users can scroll without interference under the “Ad-free” alternative starting at $4.99.

It’s unclear when and if TikTok will roll out the tiers permanently. However, it was only a matter of time before the app tried its hand at subscriptions, which seem to be sweeping the social media world. Twitter now has Twitter Blue, which allows users to pay a monthly fee for additional features such as a blue check mark and the ability to edit tweets. YouTube Premium has also been a long-running subscription service that also eliminates ads. Meta, which runs Facebook and Instagram, is also considering a paid option to rid timelines of most marketing posts.

TikTok’s subscription tier would bring in more money for the platform, which has struggled to generate revenue from its TikTok Shop. They’ve moved the storefront to the main navigation bar and have begun offering more coupons that can be used for the Shop. Still, the digital marketplace is struggling with keeping banned items away.

The testing phase will determine whether or not the subscription becomes a reality for TikTokers, though judging by its competitors rolling out ad-free tiers, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the app chooses to push forward with the new function.
