Florida authorities have blasted a mom they say went to desperate measures to avoid being arrested. Apparently, she tried to tell deputies her child was the one they needed to arrest.
The daughter, whose identity was withheld, denied the crime and unwittingly outed her 29-year-old mother only identified as Kiana, as the culprit, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office wrote in an affidavit.
The mother was arrested and charged with grand theft, officials confirmed to the Miami Herald. Authorities also learned the woman was already on probation and wanted for simple battery and shoplifting in Georgia.
As for the item stolen, it was a purse with $1,630 worth of goods inside that went missing Feb. 4 from a Five Below store in Davenport.
A pair of AirPods in the purse revealed its location, and deputies went to the location and found the purse in the seat of a car at a home, the sheriff’s office said.
“Confronted with that information, (the suspect) began to shift the blame of the theft on other people. … She even blamed her child for taking the purse,” the sheriff’s office said on its Facebook page.
However, the child refused to take the blame.
“I heard the child state: ‘That’s not true mom, you took that purse,’” a deputy noted in his report.
That is when the mother “refused to give any further statements” and was arrested.
