Mayte Garcia, ex-wife of Prince and Hollywood Exes reality star, recently opened up about the child she and Prince lost a week after his birth in 1996.
“Like most women, I always dreamt of becoming a mother,” Mayte said while attending Single Mom’s Planet’s “Single Mom’s Awards” in Los Angeles on Friday, May 7. “It just wasn’t my time yet. After that, I was broken. And I lost hope. I basically gave up my dream of becoming a mom.”
In October 1996, Prince and Mayte welcomed the birth of their first son, Boy Gregory. A week later, the infant died of Pfieffer syndrome. For several years, both Prince and Mayte remained quiet about the incident. Mayte had also had a miscarriage during the course of their marriage. The death of both babies led to the inevitable split of the couple in June 2000.
Over a decade later, Mayte made the decision to consider adopting. In 2013, she officially adopted a daughter by the name of Gia. “I fell in love … with that baby girl,” Garcia said. “Five years later, she is my greatest gift.”
