As the world continues to move towards high-functioning technology, we are now seeing the first piece of artwork from a humanoid robot.
Recently, Sotheby announced its first-ever auction featuring artwork created by a robot. The auction house is set to host a “digital art day” this month, and included in the collection is a portrait created by Ai-Da, a humanoid robot artist, titled “AI God,” a tribute to Alan Turing.
The painting, measuring 64 by 90.5 inches, was created by Ai-Da earlier this year and is expected to go for $120,000 to $180,000 at the auction. But the lingering question is, how did Ai-Da craft the portrait? The humanoid robot used advanced technology, such as a robotic arm, AI algorithm, and cameras in her eyes, to bring the image to life.
“As a machine with a fusion of electronic/AI/human inputs, her composite persona is the artwork, along with her drawings, performance art, and collaborative paintings and sculptures,” Ai-Da’s creators said.
Regarding her marketing, Ai-Da has already gained some attention in prestigious places like the University of Oxford and the Venice Biennale shortly after debuting in 2019. In May, “Al God” was exhibited at the United Nations.
“By commemorating Alan Turing in my artwork, which was displayed at the United Nations, I aim to honor his contributions towards the foundation of modern computing and artificial intelligence,” Ai-Da said about her artwork.
Nonetheless, if you want to get in on the action, the auction is expected to open on October 31st.
