Tim Walz is speaking on his experience with VP Kamala Harris on the campaign trail, admitting he was shocked by the election’s outcome.

Speaking with KSTP in his first television interview since their presidential run, Walz said he believed the American people were leaning toward their campaign.

“It felt like at the rallies, at the things I was going to, the shops I was in, that the momentum was going our way,” he explained. “So, yeah, I was a little surprised. I thought we had a positive message, and I thought the country was ready for that.”

Reflecting on the race, Walz acknowledged that history would judge whether the outgoing vice president made the right choice in choosing him as her running mate before Donald Trump clinched his return to the White House.

“Are there things you could have done differently? Since we lost, the answer is obviously yes,” Walz remarked. “On this one, I did the best I could.”

During the conversation, Walz recalled the frantic morning after Harris called him on August 6th, asking him to serve as her vice president if she were elected. His acceptance led to him being flown to Philadelphia on a private jet to be introduced at Temple University, where he and Harris shared a humorous moment.

“She turns to me and she says: ‘Well, let’s not screw this up,’” Walz remembered. “And we went out there.”

Harris ended up losing the electoral college to Trump by a 312-226 margin. The Republican candidate also captured the popular vote 49.9% to 48.4%.

Walz reflected on his brief experience with the campaign as an opportunity to “certainly get to see America” but is now ready to focus on his gubernatorial agenda in Minnesota.

“It was a privilege to do that,” Walz said. “Coming back here now and having the privilege to do this work feels really good.”
