Pipaluk Lynge, a member of Greenland’s Parliament, criticized Donald Trump Jr.’s recent visit to the island, calling it “all staged” to create the false impression that Greenlanders support President-elect Trump’s controversial desire to acquire the territory.
“No journalists were allowed to interview him,” Lynge told Politico. “It was all staged to make it seem like we — the Greenlandic people — were MAGA and love to be a part of the USA.”
Lynge, who chairs the parliamentary foreign and security policy committee, emphasized Greenland’s desire for independence.
“We want our own independence and democracy,” she said.
While Trump Jr. visited to film content for his podcast and reportedly did not engage with government officials, locals’ reactions were less than welcoming.
“Some took pictures giving him [the] finger at the airport,” she recalled. “Some wrote on Facebook: Yankee go home.”
During his visit, Trump Jr.’s team handed out “Make America Great Again” hats. Local media also reported that he had no official meetings planned. A spokesperson for Trump Jr. dismissed Lynge’s criticism, calling it “ridiculous.”
Trump recently reignited his push to purchase Greenland, framing it as a national security imperative. His remarks about using economic or military force to secure Greenland drew further rebuke, particularly from Lynge, who pointed to the mistreatment of Alaska Natives.
“Make that great before trying to invade us,” she said, referring to the history of discrimination faced by the Inuit.
Greenland, though a Danish territory, has held semi-independence since 2009, and its leaders continue to oppose U.S. control.
