Kendrick Lamar is gearing up for his Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performance this Sunday, but before hitting the stage, he sat down with Ebro Darden and Nadeska Alexis to discuss his record-breaking year, including his high-profile rap battle with Drake.

During the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show press conference Thursday, Lamar made it clear that competition has always been at the core of his artistry. “My intent was to always keep the nature of it as a sport,” he explained. “I love when artists grit their teeth… This has always been the core definition of who I am.”

Lamar’s comments come just days after his Grammy sweep, where his No. 1 diss track “Not Like Us” won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video. The track, produced by DJ Mustard, became a cultural moment, dominating the charts and fueling his highly publicized battle with Drake in 2024.

Reflecting on whether he surprised himself with the battle, Lamar was firm: “I don’t think I surprised myself… This is just a revolving door of what I’ve been doing.” He referenced his early days honing his craft in Carson studios and Compton garages, noting that those around him have always known his capabilities.

Lamar’s rap battle with Drake shook the industry, with a back-and-forth that included multiple diss tracks, legal action, and a major cultural impact. His explosive Juneteenth “Pop Out” concert, where he performed “Not Like Us” four times, solidified his victory in the eyes of many fans.
