Ananda Lewis, Former MTV VJ and Talk Show Host, Dies at 52 Following Breast Cancer Battle

Ananda Lewis, once the face of MTV’s golden era and host of “The Ananda Lewis Show,” has passed away at age 52.

The news came Wednesday, June 11th, through a Facebook post by her sister, Lakshmi Emory, who wrote, “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms.”

Ananda Lewis

Rising to fame in the late 1990s, Lewis became a household name hosting “TRL” and “Hot Zone.” Her mix of charm and authenticity earned her acclaim, with The New York Times calling her “the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl.”

In 2001, she pivoted to daytime TV, though later reflected, “I wish I had stopped the people that wanted me to do the [talk] show and said, ‘Not yet… It was overkill for me.’”

Behind the scenes, Lewis battled breast cancer privately for years. In 2020, she revealed a stage III diagnosis, saying, “My plan at first was to get out excessive toxins in my body…I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way.”

The cancer later advanced to stage IV. Reflecting on her choices, she admitted, “Looking back on that, I go, ‘You know what? Maybe I should have [gotten a mammogram].’”

A proud Howard alumna and devoted mom to son Langston, Lewis was also a carpenter and activist. Through every chapter, she remained bold, real, and unforgettable.
